Mirror reflection on youth workers' resources

Մասին

Youth workers are "instruments" in our work with young people. Therefore, being aware of one's own practices, resources, and competencies is helpful for continuous professional development.

This activity invites youth workers to look into the “mirror” of their practice, surface their resources and competences, explore growth areas, and learn from peers.

The Coaching Guide resource inspires this activity to explore the competencies and inner resources of youth workers to support young people in an empowering and educational manner. Belief and awareness in our own abilities are typically developed and reinforced through the acquisition of competencies and gained experience. For these reasons, it is important to reflect in advance on your own experiences and competencies.

Step 1. Preparing your reflection mirror

Use the paper or notebook to draw a mirror and your reflection in it. Ask yourself the following questions:
  • Who are you when engaging with young people?
  • What do you do in activities involving young people?
  • Why are you involved in youth work?

Then, download the skills cards and select 3 cards to add to your mirror:
  • 3 cards which say something what you are good at.
  • 3 cards which say something what others tell about what you are good at.
  • 3 cards which is something what you need and want to improve.

Step 2. Sharing with your peers

"Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who's the ...?" - find someone from your circles to share your mirror reflection. If you can, ask other colleagues, team members, volunteers to join this excersise and exchange your mirror reflections.

Go to the badge and submit evidence about your reflection on competiences and individual resources.

The Awero organisation created this educational resource and activity for the Erasmus+ Accreditation training for youth workers.

This activity supports youth workers' competence development in the "Managing Resources" area. Activity content and badge issuing criteria aligned with the European Training Strategy (ETS) competence model for youth workers to work internationally:
  • Demonstrating self-management skills.
  • Building on resources and opportunities from partnerships to increase quality and impact of the project, both offline and online.
