There are several ways in which a basic barista can learn to expertly advise and inform about the coffee offering in relation to the guest's preferences:
- Try different types of coffee: To be able to expertly advise on the coffee offering, it is important to try different types of coffee and learn about their taste profiles. Go to different coffee bars and ask for a tasting or cupping session.
- Learn about coffee: Learn about the origin, composition, and taste profiles of different types of coffee. Read books about coffee or take online courses.
- Practice with friends and family: Practice making coffee and advising on the different types and taste profiles. Ask for feedback and continue to learn and improve.Listen to feedback from guests: Ask guests for feedback on the coffee and their experiences.
- Listen to their suggestions and comments and use this information to further develop your knowledge and skills.
Discuss with your coach which methods you will implement to master this skill. With the aim of improving your skills as a novice professional in accurately collecting information about coffee and becoming a true coffee expert.
Together with your supervisor and coach, you determine when you have sufficiently developed these skills and earned your badge.
